Cluster Headaches
Definition They are called cluster headaches because they come in clusters every day for multiple days and then go away on their own...only to come back in a future clusters of days. Cluster headaches can occur daily for days, weeks or months before lessening occurs. Remission may last weeks or years between occurrences.
Causes The cause of cluster headaches is unclear but the location suggests a connection with the temporalis muscle (diagram) which is a fan shaped muscle starting just behind the eye, covering the temple and extending over the ear. The anterior portion of the temporalis refers pain upward and forward over the eye, while the middle portion of the muscle causes pain in the temple region.
Symptoms The pain begins a severe, sudden headache over one eye and/or in the area of the temple. At times it may involve one side of the face from neck to temple.
Treatment Treatment includes determining what caused the muscles to become tense and helping the muscles relax by removing the stimulus that caused the condition. Chiropractic treatment, physical therapy and massage therapy can help to temporarily relax the muscles, but if the pain is chronic, these procedures are only a short term cure. The cause must be determined and dealt with.
