Migraine Headaches
Definition Migraines are a very common type of headache that occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. Usually, a throbbing pain is felt only on one side of the head. Migraines occur more often in women than men. Often there is a "trigger" that starts them such as stress or a certain food. Each person has their own trigger(s).
Causes The cause of migraine headaches is unclear. Their location offers a clue. If there is a nerve or blood vessel connection as is speculated, it may come from muscle impingement on the nerve/ blood vessel in that area. Relaxation of that muscle group may help to moderate the problem.
Symptoms The pain is throbbing and may be moderate to severe. Both sides of the head may be affected but one side is often much worse in intensity. They may be located in the back of the head and neck or behind the eye.
Treatment Treatment includes drugs to mask the pain and anti-nausea medications if needed. Severe migraines are debilitating. Triggering actions, foods, or medications should be avoided. If muscles are the reason, determining what caused the muscles to become tense and helping the muscles relax by removing the stimulus that caused the original tensing is the treatment of choice.
